For decades, the Chapel Hill Historical Society, founded in 1966, and Preservation Chapel Hill, started in 1972, have been essential to collecting, preserving and highlighting what makes our town unique and treasured in the hearts of so many. These organizations have joined hands for “Heart of the Hill Tours” in response to Mayor Pam Hemminger’s call to action to truly celebrate the breadth & depth of our community with “Chapel Hill 1819/2019.” These tours promise to engage, surprise, educate and inspire you to understand Chapel Hill in a new way, commemorating where we have been, who we are and what our future might hold.
ALL ARE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE! Longtime residents, neighbors, friends, families, newcomers, visitors from around the globe, students and alumni are encouraged to join us on tour as we honor, preserve and celebrate our unique college town – home of the first public University in America.
This program is organized by Missy Julian-Fox and a group of wonderful, incredible volunteer tour leaders.
Tours have been designed by the individual guide to share pieces of our collective story and town spirit through history, lore and personal experience.
Tours last 60-90 minutes and are FREE — although we enthusiastically invite new members and encourage donations to the organizations!
